New Driver's License & ID Requirements |
|
To get or renew any driver’s license, ID card, or learner’s permit, Massachusetts residents need documentation showing U.S. citizenship or lawful presence as required by federal and state law. Visit Mass.gov/ID for more information and a complete list of acceptable identification documents. We have also created a special Info Center on our website where residents can find all the details they need about documentation requirements. This section includes specific information for non-U.S. citizens, drivers over the age of 75, learner’s permit holders, and those new to Massachusetts. Customers will have a choice between two types of credentials:- A Standard Massachusetts driver’s license or ID card, which is not valid for federal identification purposes.
- A REAL ID Massachusetts driver’s license or ID card, which is valid for federal identification purposes.
The RMV’s quick decision tool can help customers decide which card is right for them. Customers can also start applications online and get the required documents ready for their new credential at Mass.gov/ID.
