Born in 1836 in Portsmouth, NH, Thomas Bailey Aldrich was the only child of Elias Taft Aldrich and Sarah Abba Bailey--both parents descendents of families deeply rooted in Colonial New England.

George Robert Carpenter (1928 - 2006)

Artist George Carpenter’s oil seascape hangs near the top of the stairs on the second floor of the Canton Public Library.  Library records indicate that it was gifted to the library by the artist after a painting demonstration c. the late 1970’s/early 1980’s.

The Native American surname, Ahauton, appears repeatedly in Canton’s very early records-- from the mid 1600’s through the 1700’s--and is found as early in the town’s recorded history as that of any Christian family surname.
