Who can participate in Tails and Tales?
Everyone! We have four unique programs for:
- babies and preschool nonreaders
- kids in kindergarten through 5th grade
- middle and high schoolers
What’s in it for me?
Even outside the joy it brings, reading is very beneficial! Reading can be relaxing, informative, inspiring, and even life-changing. Reading during the summer can keep students from experiencing learning loss, and practicing reading skills can increase performance in all other subject areas. So while you’re staying smart and getting happy while reading, if you log your time, write reviews, and use the library, you’ll be eligible to win some really cool prizes!
What kind of prizes?
Every single person of any age who even registers for a challenge will automatically be entered into our grand prize raffle drawing. This summer, our grand prize is a yearlong family membership to the New England Aquarium, which allows admittance for up to 6 people every day! You can also earn raffle tickets to enter to win gift cards from exciting local stores, restaurants, and experiences in and near Canton!
How do I start?
Go to our Beanstack page. If you signed up last summer, click “Sign in” (in the top right corner of your screen) and enter the username and password you created. If this is your first time using Beanstack, scroll down a little bit until you see “Create an account” and click where it says “Register an Individual or Family.” Teens and adults can register as individuals or with profiles in a family. An adult will need to create a family account and make profiles for their kids and babies. Once all the readers in your family have an account and/or profiles, you can choose the program that is right for you!
Start earning badges! Reading, writing reviews, attending library programs, and events, and completing activities will earn you badges. Each badge is worth one raffle ticket that you can use to enter two raffles. The more badges you earn, the more likely you are to win! Please remember, while everyone is welcome to participate in our summer reading programs, only Canton residents will be able to win prizes, and all participants are limited to one prize.
What is The Hatchery?
Your first reading will unlock special eggs and unique creatures. There are six eggs to hatch, each with its own animal and a "Fast Fact" to learn more about the creature and its fantasy world. After you have earned all 12 Hatchery badges, keep reading and logging your time to earn more animal badges and raffle tickets.
How do I log my minutes read?
Click the "Log Reading and Activities" button in the top left-hand corner of the Beanstack site. You can even tell us what you thought of a book by selecting the "Add a Review" button instead! Even kids too little to write can submit a picture review.
Where can I see the books I've logged?
At the top of the Beanstack page select "Reading Log" to view your books and/or time logged.
How can I see what badges I've unlocked?
Select "All Badges" at the top bar of your Beanstack account to see what you've earned so far. To read a "Fast Fact" unlocked in the hatchery, click or tap on one of the creature badges you've unlocked.
Who should I contact if I still need help?
You can always call the library (781-821-5027) with any questions you have about anything. Librarians are here to help and we love to answer questions. You can also email Rosie, our resident Beanstack “expert,” and she’ll respond as soon as she can.
